I look forward to your selections every week, and I've often wanted to offer my thanks. This time the selections spanned the European-American New Music gap so well that I have to. Just as there used to be an eastcoast/westcoast divide in jazz, there now seems to be a european/american divide in New music. It is a relief when somebody follows Ellington's division instead: there's just good and bad music. Styles aren't important. It may be that the sounds are very different, but it is possible to learn to hear what's good no matter what its like. The contrasts this time were proof.
Thanks!
Richard replies: Thanks for the comment! I try to find a balance in each program, even playing music that I don't personally like that much. Nationalism doesn't come into play as much as availability. It's hard these days to find this music. But I'm glad to hear that people are listening half-way around the world, and appreciating what we're doing. Stay tuned!
