Just saw this via Gothamist. It's on 8th Avenue in the 40s, probably around 44th Street. Given a little time I think I could give you the precise location. The Howard Johnson's on the West and the hotel on the right are clues, both south of 55th Street. (The buildings are still there, but with new names.)

I couldn't be sure. I tried locating it using Google Maps street view, but it's changed so much and the google images obscure the HoJo building. Thanks for the help.

great shot, this is a bit further south than 55th, the hojo's on the left is still at 52nd street.

Thanks. Lets say it's around 48th. Maybe.

The foremost intersection in the photo is 45th (with traffic heading west). On the right, the "capri" is where Euro Diner now is. The "Fulton Hotel" is that bed & breakfast hotel. The "bar" is where McHale's used to be. The 3-story cement building still exists. The red building past that is gone, replaced by the Biltmore, Starbucks, Staples, etc. "Midtown Motor Inn" was a Days Inn and is now the Hilton Garden Inn.

Excellent forensics. Thanks.
