The same trip that took me to East Berlin got me to Munich and the German Alpine Road, driving among the Bavarian Alps and the Austria Tirol. Nikon F2 :: Kodachrome

As the EU celebrates its 50th birthday in Berlin today, here's an image from when I was in Berlin last, 1975. Many bombed-out buildings were left standing for decades by the DDR, perhaps as a reminder. My 1910 Baedeker says that Friedrichstrasse.. "is flanked with handsome and substantial business-houses, including the retail depots of several important breweries." I have been unable to identify these two buildings, which I believe were on Friedrichstrasse. At least the restaurant Schweizerhaus on the right seemed to still be functioning. Nikon F2 : Kodachrome

Every once in awhile, you stop the car, get out, and take a self-timer snapshot of yourself against an impressive background. This time I was driving south from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, to begin a solo journey along the Deutsche Alpenstrasse, thru the Alps. Looks like the self-timer caught me, age 31, in mid turn - it's an odd pose, Nikon F (or F2) : Kodachrome
